Classes

Your character's class is like their job, or their profession you might call it. Except not like a day job, much more like an adventuring job. There are eleven classes to pick from here, though more exist in expansion materials. Just as a reminder, we've only included the first three levels of each class as well. Tome can theoretically go up to level 20, but it gets pretty insane after level 10 anyway, so most people don't play as much past there. Don't think that you need to level up a whole ton to have an exciting adventure. Even in The Lord Of The Rings the group is only about 5th level by the end of the story.

When you select a class, record your maximum hit points, BAB, Saves, and how many skill points you'll assign later on. Also write down the free starting equipment that your class gets and your class abilities. You probably don't need to write down your weapon and armor proficiencies, since the free equipment you get will always be stuff you're already proficient with.

BAB stands for Base Attack Bonus, and it's the base bonus that you get on all attack rolls you make. You also add your Strength modifier to melee attacks and Dexterity modifier to ranged attacks. BAB grows at one of three different rates depending on your class: Full, Medium, or Half.

Saves stand for "Saving Throws". There are three saving throw categories: Fortitude, Reflex, and Will. Each save can be either Good or Poor. The chart shows the base value for each category at each level. In addition to the number on the chart, you add your Constitution Bonus to Fortitude, Dexterity Bonus to Reflex, and Wisdom Bonus to Will.
