Character Creation

To a create a character, you have to first pick a Race and a Class. Your race is your species (Human, Elf, Lizardfolk, etc) and you class is like your adventuring job (Knight, Monk, Sorcerer, etc). You can them in either order, but different race and class combinations might mesh together a little better than others, so you pick them as a pair.

Once you have your race and class selected, you need to generate some Ability Scores (aka Stats). In terms of how you pick your stats, it doesn't matter too much as long as every player in the group has access to the same set of stats. That's only fair after all. Two popular methods are as follows:

  • Group Roll: Every player rolls 4d6 and drops the lowest die (eg: total of 3-18, but weighted for a higher average). If there are less than 6 players someone rolls again until there are 6 numbers rolled (if there's more than 6 players someone passes). Then, every player uses that set of stats your group just generated. Each player can place them in the order they want of course.
  • Elite Array: Every player can arrange the following stats as they like: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

Once you have your stats picked you can start writing things down. Usually you write the stat's short name, then the stat, then the modifier in parentheses. So a Strength of 14 would be written as "Str: 14 (+2)". You should also write down all the info for your race and class. Some classes have you make selections between different things, so you should do that too.

Then you assign your Skill Points (an amount determined by your class), select a Feat, and determine your Starting Equipment. Your class gives you some automatic starting equipment, and you also get a bit of money to buy some extra stuff if you want. You can also hold on to the money and spend it later if you like.

You're pretty much ready to go at that point.
