Elf

"There are only two kinds of people in the world: The elves, and those who wish they were."

Elves used to be a single race, created by an elven goddess near the beginning of time, but they were long ago bio-engineered by a group of wizards that took the "base" elven form and re-worked it into dozens of varieties. Every wizard wanted something different, so the elves ended up split into dozens of different varieties. Those wizards are long since gone, but in modern times there are still more kinds of elf than most people care to keep track of. They usually live in relatively untouched natural locations, with homes and other buildings constructed to be well hidden to outsiders. Because of their long lives, most elves are very patient and averse to excessive dangers, to the point where it's considered entirely reasonable in elf society to retreat from confrontation and come back months or even years later, when circumstances can be more favorable. They don't usually let concepts like "permanent homes" or "pride" to get in the way of survival.

Elves are slightly taller and slightly lighter than humans tend to be. Elves don't get tanned when they get too much sun. Instead, an elf's skin always takes on the color of the local environment within a few years of moving there. Elves generally have hair the color of local flowers and plants, which shifts in color over time as their skin does. Elven hair is usually gown longer, though elves are rarely capable of growing beards. An elf is considered to be an adult when they turn 108 years old. Elves, like dragons, are not known to ever die of old age.

Game Mechanics

  • Speed: 30ft
  • Vision: Low-light Vision, Elves can see twice as far in the most minimal of lighting, and can retain color while doing so.
  • Elvish Senses: The keen senses of an elf give them +3 on Listen, Search, and Spot checks.
  • Woodland Lore: Elves get +3 on skill checks that involve wood or other plant matter. This mostly means Appraise, Craft, Search, and maybe Perform, but anything else too.
  • Elven Brain: Elves don't sleep. Instead, they rejuvenate themselves by meditating for 4 hours a day. This is called "trance", and the elf is fully aware of what's going around them while they do this. Elves can't be put to sleep magically. Elves also get +2 on saves against Enchantment effects.
