How To Play

Tome Basic is a tabletop roleplaying game. You pretend with your friends to be a group of adventurers going on some sort of fantasy adventure.

All but one of the players each control their own character. These are the Player Characters, abbreviated as PCs. This group is called the Party, which is short for either Adventuring Party or War Party. It's a fancy way of saying "murder hobos". The job of the player characters is to take interesting actions that improve the story. They can be funny, or heroic, or dreadful, as long as they're interesting and helping to build the plot with the rest of the group. PCs that want to sit at home and not go on adventures aren't very good PCs unless they end up going on the adventure anyway after a bit of cajoling (like a certain famous Halfling).

The final player of the game is not a Player Character, and they do not have a specific character who is their own. Instead, they are called the MC, which is short for either Mr/Ms Cavern or Master of Ceremonies. The MC describes the world that the players are in, as well as the non-player characters (NPCs) that they meet and interact with. The MC uses the rules of the game presented in the rest of the book to help them come up with interesting situations and resolve conflicts (violent or not) between the PCs and NPCs.

This is not a game with winners and losers. This is a game where you come up with stories that you want to tell people later.
